About Split
The story of Split began 17 centuries ago when Roman Emperor Diocletian built his Palace near the Roman city of Salona, where he planned to spend his final years. Over time, the Palace grew into a living city, rich in history, tradition, and cultural heritage. Diocletian’s Palace and Split’s historic centre have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1979, not only for their preservation but because they remain vibrant and lived-in.
Layers of history — from Roman times through the Middle Ages to the present — are still visible in its architecture, from the Peristyle and Romanesque churches to Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and modern elements. This blend of past and present shapes everyday life. Locals and visitors share the same cafés, markets, and the lively Riva waterfront, the heart of the city’s social life.
Split is also known for gastronomy, cultural festivals, museums, concerts, and events like Ultra Europe, as well as impressive sports achievements, including numerous Olympic medalists. When seeking peace, residents and visitors head to Marjan hill, with its forests, trails, small historic churches, and nearby beaches such as Bačvice. With all this, it’s no surprise locals proudly say: “There is no place like Split.”
